Includes about 5% extra for bad boards and cuts. Beams, posts, footings, ledger and railings depend on your design and local building code. In Ontario, many municipalities need a permit for decks more than 24 in (60 cm) off the ground or attached to the house, so check with yours first.

Assumes 4 x 4 posts, 2 x 4 rails, a 4 ft opening per gate, and 30 kg bags of fast-setting post concrete (about 0.5 cu ft each). Call Ontario One Call before you dig (it's free). Check property lines and any municipal fence bylaw on height.

Includes 10% extra for settling and uneven ground. Bag sizes vary by store, so check the litres or cubic feet on the bag. Gravel and sand weights are rough averages; dry and wet loads differ.
